The New “IT” Wristwear: Michael Kors Watches

Designer Michael Kors is one of the few American legends who has managed to stand the test of time. Much like the wristwear he creates, Kors is a uniquely American sportswear designer, known for his ready to wear women’s collections and his accompanying accessory line. Born Karl Anderson, Jr. in Long Island, Michael Kors changed his name at the ripe age of five, when his mother remarried and told him he was able to change his name if he wanted to. Already a diva of sorts, Kors chose to change his name to Michael David Kors. The newly named Michael David spent the remainder of his childhood in Merrick, New York (also the hometown of another famous American star, actress Lindsay Lohan), and later, moved to New York City, where he currently resides alongside longtime partner Lance LePere.

At just nineteen years old, Kors began designing clothes, though he’s stated that his love for women swear started way before that. He enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology and studied (what else?) fashion design; by 1981, he’d rolled out his first Michael Kors women swear line at fine retailers such as Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 1997, Kors was named creative director and women’s ready to wear designer at French fashion house Celine, where he became known for turning the suffering house into a haven for chic accessories that women couldn’t wait to get their hands on. In 2003, hot on the heels of his success, Kors said goodbye to his career at Celine, and left to focus on his own brand, which was growing quickly. In 2002, he’d launched menswear, and by 2004, he’d launched numerous diffusion lines, including the MICHAEL Michael Kors and KORS Michael Kors lines, which included not just apparel but also footwear, jeans, and handbags.

These days, Kors is a blockbuster American designer, with stores across the country, including New York, Chicago and Beverly Hills. His designs are worn by actresses like Rachel McAdams, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Blake Lively, Brooklyn Decker and more. In addition to his design lines, Kors has become somewhat of a celebrity himself, as a judge on Bravo’s acclaimed series, Project Runway. It’s safe to say that Kors has a lot on his plate – and yet, somehow, with all that going on, the man manages to design some seriously amazing wristwear. Looking for the new “IT” watch?
